Description

Motodrome offer this very suave 1970 Rover P5b Coupe, finished in Arden Green with Siver Birch roof, and buckskin leather.

Many people’s idea of the perfect colour scheme for a P5b coupe.

All P5b’s, whether Saloon or Coupe (as this one), with the Rover V8 motor, automatic transmission, PAS, and decent brakes, are supremely useable in modern-day traffic

This one is fitted with a fully-functional Webasto sunroof, which for me at least makes it the perfect car.

Fitted with heated rear window, manual choke conversion, electronic ignition, and uprated radiator Internally, it’s also fitted with front headrests, inertia reel front seat belts, and static rear belts too.

The last owner, from whom it came directly to us, acquired it in 2019 as a project car, needing quite a lot of work. Being steeped in P5’s (he owns a concours winning P5b saloon that he’s had for around 30 years) this didn’t faze him in the slightest.

Structurally, the inner, outer, and spacer sills needed complete replacement, and these were done using Wadhams parts, including new jacking points. The wing lower edges were also replaced using Wadhams panels.

Mechanically, it was both very tired and wrong in that at some point it’d been fitted with a later 4.6 Rover V8 engine. He wanted it correct and hence this was removed and replaced with a Rover 3.5 V8 as originally fitted, but a previously factory rebuilt example. Nevertheless a top end rebuild including head gaskets was carried out, and a new water pump fitted.

He further tells us that the BW35 autobox was removed and reconditioned (there is paperwork to support this) and also the differential was removed and reconditioned, although we don’t have paperwork for that.

The interior was refreshed with replacement exchange correct-type front seats, new carpets, kick panels, furflex, headlining, and the door weatherstrips were replaced. The Webasto roof was also reconditioned.

New chrome bumpers and overriders were fitted.

It was then given a glass-out respray in Arden Green/Silver Birch, with new front a rear screen seals being fitted.

Odometer reading 87000 miles, and comes with history and old MOT’s back to the mid 1990’s, although it’s fair to say the majority of the history relates to the work that’s been carried out in terms of the recent restoration. We also have the original owners manual and maintenance manual.

Driving-wise, it’s absolutely spot on. I drove it back from his house, around 30 miles in searing heat, and it didn’t miss a beat. The gearbox shifts smoothly, the power steering is nice and light, and you just waft along as if you’re in a mobile armchair.

Your chance to own a quintessential British classic, and one that’s nicely useable and sorted, without being so good that you wouldn’t want to park it anywhere.

On our own website, you’ll find our usual comprehensive video package, which, along with the extensive pictures, form part of the description.
