Description
Motodrome offer this outstanding 1975 BMW 2002 Tii, built to ‘fast road’ spec, finished in Polaris Silver with black leather interior
This original UK RHD example is one of the last of the classic 02 shape BMWs, from the days when the tag ‘The Ultimate Driving |Machine’ actually meant something. Compared to it’s British contemporaries, it’s so far ahead of the g\me it’s unreal.
Spec-wise, this one has been fitted with the 2002 Turbo body kit inc flared arches, front air dan, and rear spoiler, Minilite wheels, and a rebuilt Webasto full length sunroof.
Interior-wise, it has a pair of ex E30/E24 BMW M-sport seats in the front, and the rear seats are also black leather, reputedly from an E24.
Mechanically, the original engine has been fully rebuilt, with the original Kugelfischer mechanical injection removed and replaced with a modern electronic system, with Emerald ECU, E30 inlet manifold, and modern Mini Cooper injectors, and an uprated cam. It’s remarkably free-revving, and the custom set up has reputedly liberated another 20bhp and more low down torque.
This has been coupled to a 5-speed gearbox from an E21, and reputedly a limited slip diff from the same source..
It sits on slightly lowered springs and, we’re told, uprated shocks too. Coupled with the front and rear strut braces fitted, the shell is nicely stiffened without compromising the ride quality.
If you’re looking for a 2002Tii that’s been restored to original factory spec, this isn’t the car for you. But if you’re looking for one that both looks the part, drives like a terrier, and blows it’s equivalent Fast Fords into the weeds, this is the one.
It was subject to a 10-year restoration started in 2005, when it was found looking very sorry for itself in a garden, having sat for years. The shell, upon stripping it, was found to be in a worse state than thought, but the then owner’s background in a professional bodyshop meant it didn’t faze him too much, meaning new panelwork including, but not limited to, inner and outer sills, floorpans, front wings, valances etc were fitted, followed by a very good repaint in Polaris Silver, once the modified Turbo bodykit (modified in that the primitive screw fixings on an original have been smoothed over for a cleaner look) being fitted first.
The engine was rebuilt by Coltec Racing Engines, and it’s done around 2000 miles since the car was finished in 2015.
The car was the cover star of the January 2017 edition of Practcal Classics magazine, which ran a 6-page feature on the car and it’s restoration story. We have a copy of the magazine.
Since then, it’s been used fairly sparingly, having covered around 2000 miles, has been regularly serviced, and performs superbly. The current odometer reading is 39000 miles which is presumably 139000.
We have a very large file of history for it, back to when it was found derelict.
Whilst it’s MOT exempt, it’s currently MOT’d to mid November 2026, with no advisories
What else can I say about it? If you know your classic BMW’s, you’ll know just how special this one is, and it’s as lovely as they come.
On our own website, you'll find our usual 2 videos – a walkaround appraisal, and driving impressions, which form part of the description.
