Description
Here at Motodrome, we’ve a real soft spot for classic Americana, especially from the 1950’s, and so we’re pleased to offer this lovely 1955 Buick Special (Series 40) 2-door coupe.
Fitted with the correct ‘Fireball’ 264 cu in V8 and automatic transmission
No cooler way to cruise …and with it’s massive bench seats front and rear there’s room for plenty of friends too…
Odometer reading 51000m, and in completely standard specification with the exception of an electric fuel pump primer.
The last owner, who sourced it and personally imported it from New Hamphire US in 2014 before UK registering it in 2018, tells us that he’s always kept it garaged and it underwent a bare metal repaint in the original colour scheme in 2019, with any rust cut out and replaced with new metal, and it still presents extremely well, with excellent shut lines and panel gaps.
He further tells us that the tyres were replaced in 2019, and that the carpets and headlining are relatively new too. And that he’s serviced it himself regularly.
It starts on the button and drives like the big barge it is, with surprisingly light and direct steering, and the autobox changes smoothly for a 1950’s gearbox.
Criticisms? Very few – the chrome, and there’s a lot of it, is pitted. It’s mainly Mazak, and is 70 years old, so this is excusable. The front seat cushion is torn and worn on the base, but again, it’s 70 years old. And the fuel gauge doesn’t seem to be registering correctly.
Please note: it's just come out of our workshop following a 6-month stint there, having a full braking system rebuild, with everything replaced. Being drum brakes, they will require a little bedding in, which gives me a good excuse to drive it at least. I also asked my workshop to properly straighten the rear bumper mounts - if you look at the pictures closely, the rear bumper is slightly misaligned. Not any more.
The upshot of all this work is that the bill is eyewatering. We haven't increased the price to accomodate that, but neither are we remotely interested in 'what will you take for it mate' or anything similar. The price is as advertised.
On our own website, you'll find our usual 2 videos – a walkaround appraisal, and driving impressions, which form part of the description.
