As the modern variant becomes more and more popular and a true icon on the roads, the early W460 generation Mercedes G Wagons are quickly rising the ranks to become one of the most sought after classic 4x4s out there. This 1986 280GE ticks a lot of the important boxes and can be seen to hold great potential, soon to be tax and MOT exempt and having been extensively customised and fitted with a 5.0 litre V8 engine, the hard work has effectively already been complete, with the previous keeper informing of a £30,000 spend to get it to this stage, and now needs a motivated enthusiast with a bit of knowhow to finish it off.

Cosmetically the Mercedes seems very solid, having been finished in a modern silver colour scheme throughout. The bodywork itself presents nicely with a few minimal marks and blemishes as to be expected. Inside a set of modern electric seats have been fitted for improved comfort. There are a few trim panels and facias that need to be upholstered and refit etc and at present the electric front windows are inoperative.

Mechanically are where things get interesting with this one. In place of the original lacklustre 2.8 litre unit we find a 5.0 V8 - understood to be an M117 engine - paired to an automatic gearbox for massively improved grunt and performance. At present it runs drives and changes gear however it will need some fine tuning before hitting the road. The braking system will need some attention as they are very weak and it is running in 2WD form currently and so the gearbox will need to be adapted should you wish to run it as a 4wd setup.
