Description

Incredibly well designed and available with a selection of classically well-engineered Mercedes diesel engines, the T2 series of Mercedes commercials were brilliant workhorses in their day and in the modern era have become highly collectible. Thanks to their adaptability and legendary "million mile" engines, T2s can be seen almost as a blank canvas ideal for camper conversions, race team trucks or for mobile businesses.

This particular example is a 1989 709D. It has been taken down the motorhome/camper route at present and now sits as either a running driving light project that needs finishing/smartening, or can be stripped out and entirely re done to a new owners exact specs.

This camper has been used regularly in its current guise for many years, with the MOT only just coming to an end in January 2026...

Originally white, the 709 has been refinished in a matte green motif, which can be considered OK. There are certainly areas for improvement aesthetically with blemishing, bubbling and general patina, though it is arguably usable as is if you're looking for the "rough and ready" look. Viewers will note that a bespoke metal carrier frame has been fabricated for the rear, ideal for increased storage or potentially as a motorcycle carrier, etc. On the roof sits a solar panel and satellite dish, though we have tested neither at present.

The interior, is in similar form and, though arguably functional as a camper currently, does show signs of age, wear and tear. There is a toilet, shower cubicle, kitchenette and seating that folds into one double and one single bed for 3-berth sleeping quarters. We have not tested any of the amenities for functionality so, please bid as if they don't work. The rear lights we know will need rewiring.

Mechanically the 709 appears quite well, boasting the legendary OM364 I4 diesel engine and power assisted steering. We have taken it for a short drive around our farm, and it performed nicely; starting running, driving and stopping. At present the truck does have a valid MOT; expiry 21/01/26.
