Description

Here at Motodrome, in terms of classic cars, there’s 2 things we love. Classic French cars (especially Citroens), and cars that are patinated.

So for us, this 1966 ‘rat look’ Citroen Ami 6 Berline ticks both those boxes. .

When was the last time you saw one of these rare, baroque-styled cars on the road? At a classic car meet, it’ll attract far more attention than any nice, shiny Ferrari or Jaguar.

The Ami was introduced by Citroen in 1961, and they’re largely based on the ubiquitous 2CV, but with outlandish 1960’s styling, which, frankly, you either love or hate. Personally I love it, especially the reverse-rake rear window with sun blind, but I do wonder what substances the designer, Flaminio Bertoni, was imbibing at the time.

And the Ami 6 Berline is the rarest model

According to it’s history file, ABW seems to have spent most of it’s life in long-term ownership in the South of France before being imported to the UK in 2019, and it’s odometer shows 65000kms.

The enthusiast who imported it wanted to preserve the patinated exterior, but ensure that the underside, mechanics, and interior were as good as possible. Hence it was treated to new floors (including the boot floor) and I have to say the work that’s been carried out here is utterly faultless. My mechanic, who is one of the best welders and fabricators around, said the structural work is among the best he’s seen.

The original 2-cylinder 602cc air-cooled engine has been extensively overhauled with new valves, rings etc and fitted with a new carburettor, and 123 electronic ignition,. it’s on the button and smoke free.

Also fitted with new 6v battery, recent new wheels and tyres, brakes, dampers etc, front grille blind, and rear window blind.

Lastly, the interior was completely re-upholstered in the correct blue patterned and buttoned cloth, and fitted with new door cards.

Clearly, with it’s patinated exterior (please don’t paint it – it should be left exactly as it is) it’s not going to appeal to everyone, but in my opinion it’s a lovely thing to have, and drives just the way a 60’s Citroen should do, with lovely soft seats. And you can easily take the seats out for picnics etc.

Cool French chic – what’s not to like? And I doubt you’ll see another one on the road.

It comes with a good history file, including lots of documents from it’s previous Gallic life.

On our own website, you'll find our combined walkaround appraisal and driving impressions video which forms part of the description.
