Interior & Equipment

The interior is completely unmarked and as new. 3M Thinsulate and Dynomat have been used throughout for sound deadening then all new interior panels dressed in red and Coventry cream vinyl with a fluted design. A full Rusty Lee Rock n Roll double bed, bespoke solid light oak bulkhead camper unit with plenty of storage and a gas burner and sink.

The cab area has been fully refurbished using the original seat frames. All new seat foams, seat coverings, bulkhead trim, kick panels, carpets, door cards, Wolfsburg West chrome buckle 2 point lap belts etc. Grundig period MW/ LW radio and discrete VW Dash speaker, original roof air flow system, and fully functional original cab heating which works well.

The original Bakelite steering wheel is in perfect order, unspoilt dashboard and the original speedo rebuilt, calibrated and set to zero, fully rewired throughout.

The interior conversion was completed Summer 2020 by Automotive Interior Trim & Upholstery, Newcastle-under Lyme, Staffordshire at the cost of circa £5000 and has never been used.

Exterior

This distinctive and desirable T2 Splittie van was subject to a bare metal restoration with a full photographic record and completed Summer of 2019. The body was shot blasted, old chassis sections removed and replaced, the cargo floor, inner and outer sills, door skins, bottom door sections, rear corners, front arches front lower nose and inner sections all replaced and in some cases remanufactured by hand. Hundreds of hours were spent creating this outstanding Splittie we have today. All bodywork was carried out by Soden Group Motorsport, Great Haywood, Staffordshire at the cost of circa £26k.

Being a genuine factory RHD UK home market van means the barn doors open on the left-hand side.

The stunning two-tone paintwork in Titan Red & Beige Grey has a flawless deep bright uniformed shine throughout with super straight panels, perfect panel fit and gaps. All of the glass is original VW and factory stamped, all rubber seals have been replaced, and all external lights and brightwork are in stunning order.

The chassis and all the underside are fully detailed and present equally as well as the top. New fuel tank, fully refurbished heat exchangers... The list goes on and on, simply stunning.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

Filling the arches are the original fully restored VW standard steel 15" wheels with new stainless steel hubcaps and all matching premium Riken - Cargo 185/ 80 R15 tyres.

A VW Jim remote brake servo has been fitted and all new standard drum brake system including hoses, fittings, shoes, backing plates and cylinders which operate perfectly via the uprated twin circuit system. The brakes pull up sharply and true with a positive peddle feel.

Autocraft steering rack conversion (the original overhauled steering box is included should you wish to put it back to standard),overhauled front beam with all new spindles and link pins. A front antiroll bar has been fitted which really improves the drive.

Engine & Transmission

The spotlessly clean show standard engine bay houses a newly fitted AD code 1641cc VW Engine Company engine with engle 100 high lift cam, twin 34ICT Weber carbs and conversion to alternator for better charging. Complete with a full stainless steel Vintage Speed exhaust and manifold system, a Fireboy gas fire extinguisher system with active light on the dash, fuel cut-off valve and battery isolator switch.

The gearbox has been fully overhauled by Limebug and rebuilt to a Freeway Flyer to give better cruising in 4th gear. The reduction boxes have also been refurbished and all new bearings fitted with new seals.

On the road, she pulls strongly with no hesitation and effortlessly keeps up with everyday traffic. She runs perfectly with no issues, starts from hot or cold with ease and idles beautifully. The clutch is light and progressive in operation, the 4-speed gearbox selects easily and is positive and precise in operation...

Wonderful, such fun to drive and what an unmistakable sound track.

Summary

This is a very rare and desirable 1964 model Type 2 Split Screen panel van. German-built in the Hannover factory, original RHD UK home market vehicle. First registered 1st October 1964.

The detailed history file contains past owner details of which it's only had 2 keepers in the last 25 years, a folder full of receipts for parts and specialist work carried out during the restoration from 2017 to 2020 totalling £39, 385, many past MOT certificates dating back to 1991 and a full photographic record of the van before, during and after its extensive restoration completed summer 2020.

The van has covered a mere 213 miles since restoration and presents as new, The previous owner has lavished thousands of pounds making this Splittie into the exceptional standard it is today and a sure show winner.
