Description
This Porsche 911 began life on 10 June 1975 as a 2.7S Targa one of the early impact bumper cars, mechanically very similar to the legendary 1973 2.7 RS cars. After a full life it was acquired by the current owner in 2020. He realised that the 911 needed attention to the body in all the usual places for these early cars but was a great basis for a restoration. So he set about eliminating the inevitable corrosion and took the decision to recreate the car as a Restomod evoking the earlier 911 RS light weight and simpler body styles. Rather than just recreate the slim bumper long bonnet look he decided to incorporate the outlines of the impact bumpers while saving weight and drastically simplifying the structure which we feel looks terrific and makes the car somewhat unique.
His aim was to create a light weight 911 with the driver focused handling and agility of the early cars combined with a later more powerful engine. Here is how he created this gem of a car;
- Ditched all unnecessary weight, electrical items and trim. Loosing the original impact bumpers and electric mirrors alone saved significant weight
- Any corrosion was eliminated from the body shell and the modified front and rear profiles created in metal before the car was resprayed in its striking shade of orange. The slightly flared rear arches from a later 911 that had been fitted earlier were retained.
- Fitted a 3.0 litre engine from the later 911 SC model which boosted power from 175 PS (129 kW; 173 hp) to 204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp),gaining the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a 5-speed 915 transmission.
- The engine was given a comprehensive top end re-build with new oil seals fitted and all work checked and verified by Northway Porsche. It runs beautifully.
- A new clutch was also fitted and combines well with one of the smoothest 915 gearboxes we have come across.
- Overhauled the suspension and lowered the car to improve stance and cornering
- Re-built the brakes including upgrading the front calipers and fitting new discs and pads.
- The Fuch wheels, 7in at the front and 8in at the rear were refurbished with the centres painted silver as on the early cars and fitted with the correct 205 and 225 section 16in tyres.
- The light weight theme was continued with the interior with RS style light weight door cards a light weight carpet set and lighter later Porsche seats
- The exhaust was replaced with a bespoke stainless steel system that looks great and sounds superb.
So there you have it a car that is unique, looks stunning and drives with the focused precision enabled by the RS weight reduction philosophy. All this at a new price that makes this a great opportunity to own a car that you are not afraid to drive and enjoy.
