Once upon a time, Volkswagens were, as the name suggests, in German, ‘people’s cars’ – sensible and solid transport. Even in the mid-Eighties, despite the success of the Golf GTi, people still thought of Volkswagens as dependable rather than desirable.

All that changed in 1989 when the company unveiled the Corrado. It was undoubtedly the most elegant Volkswagen to date and would go on to be the company’s fastest ever car.

Built at the Karmann factory in Osnabruck, and designed by Herbert Schaefer, the Corrado actually replaced the Scirocco in many markets, with the supercharged Corrado G60 the initial powerhouse of the range. But the six-cylinder VR6 took that mantle with the first UK buyers getting their hands on the car in 1992.

The Corrado’s characteristic wedge-shaped profile, and an active rear spoiler that raised automatically when the car exceeded 56mph added some additional exclusivity.

The Corrado’s main attraction is that it’s a pocket performance car with good looks. It’s an affordable proposition either as a weekend toy or as an everyday “coming classic”, and handling is simply enormous fun

Topping the range initially was the G60, a surprisingly quick car considering it was limited to 158bhp – it could dispatch the 0-60mph run in 7.8 seconds, and go on to a maximum of 140mph. Novelties included an electrically operated rear spoiler, which opened up at motorway speeds.
